Cognitive and computational mechanisms of learning in the sensory world
Complex – yet ordinary – behaviors like communicating with others, recognizing visual objects, and understanding abstract concepts seem effortless. But these behaviors remain challenging for artificial intelligent agents and require substantial experience and training. Each requires behaving efficiently in complex and dynamic environments and demands learning to represent the external world internally. How does this learning proceed? How does it impact decision making, interact with perception, and give rise to individual differences? My research program tackles these questions using a computational cognitive science framework that combines computational and experimental approaches. In this talk, I will give an overview of three lines of my research that investigate (1) how we learn by interacting in naturalistic environments in pursuit of complex goals, (2) individual differences in learning and decision-making processes, and (3) how our prior experiences shape perception and constrain learning.
