Join COSLISC in our speaker series, The QueerSci Talks, which highlights queer visibility and excellence in STEM. Hear about Sifan Kahale’s trans journey and impressive career track from astronomy to software engineering and entrepreneurship!

Speaker Bio:
Being disappointed with the difficulty of using early computers, she designed and built her own. Sifan then started a company producing these for the University of Wisconsin's research labs. Sifan was always active in astronomy, finally landing a job on Maui at the PanSTARRs Observatory. When she was hired, her first job was to automate the observatory and set it up for 24/7-365 operation. She was also one of the observers. Sifan was involved in building a virtual presence for the observatory in Second Life and it was there that her identity as a trans-woman was awakened. Sifan 'retired' to the central Oregon coast where she teaches at the local college, gives talks and hosts stargazing events. She has her own observatory at home where she enjoys taking beautiful deep-sky images.
