When it comes to philanthropy, many people say they want to help, but fewer actually step up to do it. It takes a special kind of person—someone like you—to care as deeply as we do at RIT about student success and groundbreaking research that improves the world.

That’s why we’re so grateful for all the individuals who help make our work in higher education possible and rewarding. As a Sentinel Society member, you have gone a step beyond making an investment in RIT. You are an essential and valued partner in our efforts to enhance and broaden our students’ educational opportunities and experiences.

Thank you for helping make a positive impact and for recognizing the value of RIT education. We simply couldn’t do what we do without you!

Arthur Deane BS ’08

Having already achieved many career goals that he set early on, Sentinel member Arthur Deane BS ’08 says that he has turned his primary focus to how he can make a difference in the lives of others. In addition to supporting the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS) General Fund, he recently established a scholarship for African American, Latin American, and Native American (AALANA) students enrolled in RIT’s cybersecurity program as a way to financially help students within this growing industry.

“My hope is to be one of many pillars of support to students,” explains Arthur. “Life has taught me that strength is found in community. As an alum, I feel it’s both a privilege and a responsibility to give back to RIT and help other underrepresented students gain the valuable education I received.”

Arthur studied electrical engineering as an undergraduate student and recalls being among only a few students of color in the program. By his fifth year, he was the only Black student graduating in his major. Now a cybersecurity professional, Arthur hopes his scholarship fund will help build a more representative and inclusive experience for students in a growing technical field.

As a student, Arthur participated in several programs that made a significant impact on his personal and professional growth. His involvement with RIT’s International House helped expose him to other cultures and people from diverse backgrounds. He completed critical co-op programs, which was the main reason he initially chose to attend RIT, and he worked at the student-staffed Telefund, where he interacted with alumni and student families, instilling his understanding of philanthropy.

Arthur shares, “The more I spoke with alumni during my job at the Telefund, the more I realized how necessary alumni giving is. Our support is crucial to keeping the university running and growing—and that’s helpful to current students, future generations of students, and to alumni.”

The New York City native now lives in Maryland and is the chief information security officer at Amazon Health Services. Upon graduating from RIT, Arthur pivoted his career aspirations and earned his master’s degree in information security from the University of Maryland. He has published two cybersecurity books, is an adjunct professor at American University, and is a member of the Computer Science Advisory Board at Howard University. Essential to his work and volunteer duties is his passion and drive for mentorship. Arthur serves on RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences National Council as a way to stay involved with the college’s mission and commitment to students.

“At this point in my career, my interests have shifted from the ‘technology aspect’ to the ‘people aspect,’” Arthur says. “It’s evolved beyond my personal achievements; now, it’s about empowering others and giving back.”

He proudly adds, “There’s a unique joy in mentoring and coaching up-and-coming technologists of color—it’s a privilege I hold dear.”

Headshot of Beitris McKeon

Beitris McKeon BS ’14

Sentinel member Beitris McKeon BS ’14 never dreamed she would be a small business owner. In the past decade, since graduating from RIT with a physician assistant (PA) degree from the College of Health Sciences Technology (CHST), she’s put into motion the career and life she’s always wanted.

“I love how much I was set up for success at RIT, especially in my field,” Beitris comments. “I was funneled directly into the profession I was working toward. I had a professor who stood behind me and was my biggest cheerleader when times were tough. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her and her unwavering support.”

As an alum and donor, Beitris hopes to make a similar positive impact on current and future Tigers.

“I want students to know that there are people out there—who they may not even know—who were once in their shoes and are cheering them on from afar. I decided to become a member of the Sentinel Society because I was a student who succeeded with help from generous individuals. I want to be able to help the next generation believe in themselves and take a small burden off their plates through financial support.”

Beitris established McKeon Medical Consulting LLC in 2023 after serving as a physician assistant expert witness for medical malpractice cases across the U.S. She explains that starting her own business was a “huge milestone” and that she is proud of the expertise she garnered through her work at several hospitals and with her RIT degree.

“I love seeing CHST's progress in the short time since I graduated. I want to be part of keeping RIT on the cutting edge of medicine and PA programs.” Beitris was immersed in her academics and participated in Women’s Track and Field while she was an undergraduate student. She recalls fellow RIT students taking their studies very seriously compared to some friends and family members who went to other colleges. She shares that this critical focus on world-renowned education is what helps prepare graduates for purposeful vocations.

Along with helping others, Beitris enjoys cooking, baking, traveling with her boyfriend, and spending time with her three nephews and her French bulldog, Churro.

Headshot of Robert Hoggard

Robert Hoggard

Robert Hoggard has worked at RIT since 2021, first as a fundraiser for Academic and Student Affairs and now as a director in the Multicultural Center for Academic Success (MCAS). He enjoys his hands-on role, working with a diverse body of students as they make their way through college and beyond.

“I felt I was being called to help students with their academic development and the ability to reach their best selves,” recalls Robert, who moved into his current role in February 2022. “Seeing their growth is very rewarding. I like making a positive impact and feeling I’ve done my part to push them to success.”

Robert also joined the Sentinel Society in 2022 and allocates his gift to the Division of Diversity and Inclusion. He hopes to increase financial resources for students in need, and he has seen how the Sentinel funds have helped supply everything from textbooks to industry conference travel dollars for individuals over the last few years.

“I want to see students thrive, especially those who are succeeding because some additional aid was made available to them,” explains Robert. “As a donor and university employee, I can see the value Sentinel Society funding provides. It’s an investment in students by helping to remove some of the barriers they face.”

Robert has always dedicated his professional and personal time to being a change-maker. Before joining RIT, he worked for Rochester Regional Health Foundations as the founding development officer for health equity and inclusion initiatives. He also serves as a senior pastor for the East Penfield Baptist Church and volunteers on several nonprofit boards.

In his free time, Robert enjoys playing pick-up basketball, hiking, and discovering new restaurants in Rochester, N.Y.

What's new on campus

Tiger Stadium

In March, RIT broke ground on the highly-anticipated, state-of-the-art stadium project. The new Tiger Stadium, anticipated to open in 2025, will feature upgraded locker rooms and amenities for athletes and an enhanced fan experience, including an indoor hospitality suite, on-site concessions, and upgraded outdoor seating for 1,200. The project comes after last year’s construction of a new, dedicated track and field facility across Andrews Memorial Drive, major upgrades to the baseball and softball fields, and the construction of Doug May Field. This facility will be a true focal point for Tiger spirit.

Construction continues on the new two-story research facility, located on the southwest side of campus near R Lot and Global Village. The new building will provide 18 laboratory spaces for science, computing, and engineering teams. Occupancy is expected in fall 2024.

Music Performance Theater

RIT’s new Music Performance Theater, designed by world-renowned firm Michael Maltzan Architecture, will house a three-story, 750-seat venue that exceeds 40,000 square feet and will feature a restored 1927 Baron Opus 234 pipe organ. Construction is occurring adjacent to Institute Hall and Engineering Hall and is expected to be completed in 2026.
