Meet Your Graduate Student Leader: In Conversation with the Graduate Senator

Ever wondered about the faces behind RIT's graduate student representation? Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with our current Graduate Senator. Meet Jyothi Bhavani Bachu, the Graduate Senator (Term: Fall 2024), and learn about her journey at RIT and discover how she's working to enhance the graduate student experience at RIT. Read on to discover what drives our graduate leader and her vision for RIT's future. 

1. Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to pursue this position as a Graduate Senator?

I’m currently pursuing my MBA at RIT, I’m in the second year of the program. With a few years of experience leading cross-functional teams, I have a passion for collaboration and problem-solving. Originally from India, I’ve been involved in leadership roles, and as a Graduate Senator, I want to leverage my experience to ensure that the voices of graduate students are heard and that we create meaningful improvements on campus. I aim to build stronger connections within our graduate community and make RIT a place where all graduate students feel supported.

2. To help our readers get to know you better, could you share a fun fact about yourself that most people might not know?

A fun fact about me is that I’m an avid plant enthusiast! I love growing different types of plants, taking care of them has become a calming routine for me. It's always exciting to add a bit of nature to my living space.

3. What are you most looking forward to during your time as a graduate senator?

I’m looking forward to meeting fellow graduate students and helping to create a more supportive and connected community. I am excited to work on initiatives that enhance resources and opportunities for graduate students, whether through academic support, professional development, or campus life improvements.

4. Are there any specific initiatives or projects you are particularly excited to work on?

I’m particularly excited to focus on two key areas: improving employment opportunities for graduate students and addressing mental health support on campus. As someone with experience in product management and talent acquisition, I understand the importance of career readiness. I’d like to collaborate with the career services team to enhance job placement programs and networking opportunities for graduate students. Additionally, I’m passionate about advocating for better mental health resources and ensuring students have access to the support they need to succeed both academically and personally.

5. What message would you like to send to the graduate students at RIT as you begin your term?

My message to all graduate students is that your voice matters. I’m committed to making sure your concerns are heard, whether they relate to academic support, mental health resources, or career opportunities. My goal is to work alongside you to create a better, more inclusive experience at RIT. Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any ideas, challenges, or suggestions. Together, we can make meaningful changes that will positively impact our graduate community.

6. How can students get involved or share any ideas or concerns with you?

Students can reach out to me directly via email at jxbsg@rit.edu or by visiting the Student Government office. I’m always available for a chat, and I encourage students to stop by if they want to discuss any ideas or concerns

7. What’s been the highlight of your time at RIT so far?

The highlight of my time at RIT has been the opportunity to work on diverse projects, from product management initiatives to research, while collaborating with incredibly talented individuals from various disciplines.

8. If you had to describe your experience at RIT in three words, which ones would you choose?

Challenging, Empowering, Transforming.
