We are proposing a video for the virtual Imagine RIT experience, which covers the work done creating a bioreactor as part of MSD. NASA is hosting a competition called the Deep Space Food Challenge - a competition hosted to drive innovative solutions for producing food for consumption during remote exploration missions that is resource efficient, sustainable, and palatable. The RIT Space Exploration Club (SPEX) Biohabitat team is currently working on designing a bioreactor for the cyanobacteria Arthrospira Platensis, commonly known as Spirulina, as a nutritional supplement for astronauts on long-term space missions. The Biohabitat Bioreactor is a fully-functional prototype designed to maintain the optimal growth conditions for Spirulina. The bioreactor consists of an enclosure with a microcontroller running the operation of: growth lights, heating system, air-pump agitator, and pH regulation system.
