Bits 'n Bytes - AI Powered Vending Machine

Location

Golisano Hall (GOL/070) - 1949 (East Hallway)

The visitor will arrive at our booth where we will explain to them that Bits 'n Bytes is a next-generation vending machine. We'll tell them about how it uses a combination of weight sensors, computer vision, and edge compute AI to determine what a user took out of the machine. There is a screen that shows a live-view of what is happening on the machine, with detection boxes around items in the machine and statistics such as temperature, GPU utilization, etc.. We will offer the visitor the opportunity to demo the machine to see for themselves. If they choose to do this, we will ask for their name. We will scan a 3D printed RFID token and enter their name to create an "account" associated with that token. They will then join the queue for demoing the machine. When it is their turn, we'll walk them through the process. They scan their RFID token on the machine's NFC reader, after which the doors will open and the screen on the machine will say "welcome [their name]". They are able to grab whatever food/beverage items they would like from the machine (free of charge, obviously). The cart will populate with the correct items, even if they choose to put an item back. When they have finalized their item decisions, they will close the doors and the transaction will automatically be ended. The screen will prompt "would you like a receipt?" if the user wants a receipt, they can enter their phone number or email to receive a receipt. They can also choose "no receipt", or we (the exhibitors) might enter our own phone numbers to show the visitor how the receipt function works even if the user feels uncomfortable entering their phone number but wants to see the feature. After this, the demo is over, and the visitor can go along to another exhibit but with a snack/beverage in hand!
