Center on Access Technology's Projects: PopSign and BEACON
PopSign and PopSign AI are two apps that make learning American Sign Language fun and interactive. The aim of the game is to pop as many bubbles as you can; you match the video with an ASL sign on the bottom of the screen with the bubbles containing the written English word to pop the bubbles. They are intended to educate parents with Deaf and hard-of-hearing children in ASL, but they are open for anyone who wants to learn ASL vocabulary. You can download these apps from Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. BEACON (Broadcasting Emergency Alerts, Crisis Outreach and Notification) is an ongoing project that aims to develop an emergency alert system which is accessible to Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. It uses IoT devices and Raspberry Pi to trigger a visible and haptic system that warns and informs Deaf and hard-of-hearing people of an event with a high probability of mass casualties (e.g., natural disasters, nuclear meltdowns, and terrorist acts). This project is funded by a NSF CIVIC grant and CAT is partnering with Monroe County Office of Emergency Management along with other partners to develop this communication device designed for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The PopSign exhibit will have a number of electronic devices provided by our partners in Google for a hands-on demonstration of PopSign and PopSign AI. It will have a projector showing the game to people as it is being played. PopSign signs will hang on the wall behind the booth. On the table will be brochures, pens/styli for people to use on the provided phones and miscellaneous promotional materials. The BEACON exhibit will also show a number of electronic devices that will demonstrate the prototype of the emergency alert system to the public. It will have a M5 Stack and a lamp fited with a smart bulb.
