Collaborative for Plastics and the Environment

Location

We are an interdisciplinary team of faculty, staff, and students at the Rochester Institute of Technology who are working on understanding the input, transport, fate, and effects of plastic pollution in the watershed of Lake Ontario. We also develop and implement educational curriculum to teach about plastic pollution to the community. We estimate that around 1,500 metric tons of plastic enters Lake Ontario each year, but even more is trapped and stored across the watershed. Our group uses technological solutions to remove debris from the environment. Data on the removed debris is used to develop estimates of the amount of plastic in the environment to help estimate risk and inform policy and solutions. Our research connects RIT with the larger community through partnerships with the University of Rochester, Monroe County, Rochester Museum and Science Center, Seneca Park Zoo, Walking for Rochester, SRGMF, R-Centers, and local schools. Visitors will be able to interact with exhibits and equipment related to plastic pollution. Explore plastics, recycling, water systems, and human health with hands-on activities. Learn about our teams latest findings from our team and their academic posters. See the tools we use to study this complicated topic.
