Concrete Canoe

Location

Engineering Technology Hall (ENT/082) - 1125

The concrete canoe will hopefully be displayed in the soils lab in ENT with props relating to the theme, racecar. Our canoe is named Turbo Tiger and it does, in fact, float. We use lightweight concrete and specific admixtures that create concrete with a unit weight as close to water as possible, allowing the large canoe to float. The canoe will be on display for people to touch and admire, with multiple of our team members standing by to answer any questions. In the past, we have been asked to describe practical applications for lightweight concrete, as well as answering questions about how we did in our recent regional competition.

A person using a depth checker in the first layer of concrete. A member measuring liquid admixtures in graduated cylinders with other members gathered around. Two people hand mixing a batch of concrete. Members gathered around the canoe placing concrete. A gloved hand pressing concrete into the canoe. Members gathered around the canoe placing a layer of mesh on top. People gathered around the concrete canoe checking depth and placing concrete. A person troweling the keel of the canoe.
