ESHS capstone projects Monitoring Wells, Protective Equipment and Recycling galore!
3 capstone teams present their projects providing insights into what opportunities await our graduates. The first is based on Gabes project an interactive personal protective equipment activity where visitors will identify what personal protective equipment fit specific example tasks. Pictures from the capstone location (a New York business) will be used to set the challenges and then the guests will be given access to a table of PPE where they will then choose what PPE fits the tasks they were shown. Hydraulic Monitoring Well, learn how to collect your own ground water samples: Emma Will be presenting my capstone project in the Environmental Sustainability, Health and Safety BS program. In my project, Emma went out to the monitoring wells we have installed on campus, took measurements, and performed Rising Head Tests to create a map of the wells’ locations and of the aquifer's hydraulic conductivity. This will be conveyed to the public on a poster that will include multiple pictures of the different steps from the field as well as the map created. They will be able to see visuals of how the project progressed and what the deliverables are. I will also be creating a prop “well” with a 5-gallon bucket and PVC well screen. I will fill this with water and provide a clear plastic bailer so that people can “bail” a “well” themselves and physically interact with the presentation. They, or I, can even time how long it takes for the well to fill back up so they can perform their own Rising Head test. They will be able to see the skills that can be learned in the ESHS Hydrology and GIS classes taught at RIT Is your Trash Truly Trash: Juliana and Skylar will present their project. The students researched different methods for communication of recycling instructions. Using this information they have prepared a new draft RIT recycling poster. In addition to a poster summarizing their presentation the students will also present an interactive activity where participants will be given the students draft poster or the official RIT poster and then asked to sort the wastes presented to them. Students will then collect data to evaluate if their newly designed poster is a more efficient tool to communicate recycling information.
