Fight Skin Cancer with DIY Sun Exposure Bracelets
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light is a significant risk factor for the development of skin cancer. Using innovative UV-sensing, color-changing beads, our exhibit aims to educate visitors about the risks associated with sun exposure. As an active chapter of the American Cancer Society on Campus, we are deeply committed to raising awareness about cancer prevention and supporting vital research and treatment efforts. Through our interactive exhibit, we seek to convey the critical message about the dangers of ultraviolet (UV) light from sun exposure and its link to skin cancer. Engaging posters and handouts will provide detailed insights into skin cancer risks, preventive measures, and valuable resources available through the American Cancer Society. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore this information at their own pace and take away informative handouts for further reference. At the heart of our exhibit is the understanding that excessive UV exposure can lead to DNA damage in skin cells, increasing the risk of cancer. Our knowledgeable representatives will be on hand to share key information about skin cancer and address any inquiries from visitors. The highlight of the exhibit will be an interactive demonstration that showcases how well various SPF sunscreens protect against UV radiation. Using the UV-sensing beads, visitors will witness firsthand how different levels of SPF shield the beads (and by extension, their skin) from UV exposure. This demonstration aims to teach visitors about the importance of selecting and applying sunscreen for skin protection. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to create personalized bracelets using a variety of beads, including the UV-sensing ones. These bracelets, equipped with UV-sensing beads, serve as a tangible reminder of the importance of sun protection. Visitors can wear them during Imagine RIT and beyond, promoting cancer awareness and encouraging skin protection. As in earlier years, we envision our exhibit located in the Breezeway, where ample sunlight allows for demonstrations with the color-changing beads. This strategic placement will ensure easy accessibility for visitors, inviting them to explore and engage with our educational materials. By providing a memorable and informative experience, we aim to empower visitors to prioritize skin protection and make informed choices about sun exposure. Together, let's shine a light on the importance of sun safety for healthier, happier lives.
