Freshman Imaging Project: BAM! (Berry Analysis Machine)
We are presenting a fruit imaging system called the Berry Analysis Machine, or BAM! for short. As a viewer, you can see BAM! in action, seeing as it looks at the fruit it is analyzing and finding out the specifics of how the system works and how we built it. BAM! uses a light-isolated frame with various LEDs and a camera to shine various wavelengths of light on strawberries to visualize particular defects they have. These defects are then recorded by the camera and processed in a computer. The system reviews and then rates the amount of defects it has to see if it is capable of consumption. We built this in collaboration with Wegmans here in Rochester so they can utilize it in warehouses for more accurate fruit scaling. We designed it by identifying issues strawberries have, and the best way to detect them in mass, via imaging. From there we began working on a framework and programming to make it possible, integrating many elements similar to MISHA, Multispectral Imaging System for Historical Artifacts.
