MSD L3 18994 Leak testing with no leak port

Location

The current leak testing system for products without leak ports is a single chamber that can only fit a certain size product and requires unorthodox pressure in order to close the chamber and ensure a seal. To fix these shortcomings, a nesting doll system, for a “one size fits all” device, and a piston powered chamber closure were implemented. The nesting doll system allows for efficient testing of products of different sizes by reducing the volume in the chamber down to the size of the product being tested. The piston powered closing mechanism, along with guide rails and magnets, provide a reliable and repeatable process for sealing the pressure chamber. These improvements and decisions around them are discussed in this paper. The testing that was done on the final product showed that it was able to successfully perform the differential pressure decay test on a product and have accurate results, thus demonstrating its ability to function as a leak testing apparatus.
