Deaf President Now! – a groundbreaking documentary from Apple Original Films – tells the powerful story of the 1988 Deaf President Now (DPN) movement and its lasting impact on Deaf leadership, education, and representation. This film features the collaboration of our alum Nyle DiMarco, ’13, and Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim. It showcases the leadership of Jerry Covell, ’89; Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, ’89 & G-’92; Tim Rarus, ’89; and Greg Hlibok, ’90, DPN’s remarkable student activists called the DPN4, and celebrates the enduring legacy of their courage in standing up for what was just and securing our first Deaf president. This film features more than 40 Deaf subjects, cast, and crew, including Deaf Lens producer Wayne Betts, Jr., E-’03, and Jonaz McMillan, ’10 & G-’16

Second, Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore reflects on the inspiring life and career of Academy Award-winning actor Marlee Matlin, H-’87, the first Deaf actor to win an Oscar. Directed by Shoshannah Stern, ’05, in her directorial debut, this deeply personal and intimate documentary explores the highs and lows of Matlin’s journey, from her groundbreaking success at age 21 to overcoming personal and professional challenges, including years of sobriety and advocating for the Deaf community. Matlin’s story is not only a celebration of her achievements but also a testament to the enduring impact of Deaf representation and the courage required to change an industry.
