Axom Gallery exhibition features work by RIT alum

Gareth Fitzgerald Barry recycles found objects into sculpture

Axom Gallery, 176 Anderson Ave., Suite 303, will showcase the work of RIT alumnus Gareth Fitzgerald Barry in the exhibition “Pour Quality.”

Gareth Fitzgerald Barry has an interest in recycling found objects into sculpture—drawing attention to things that have been forgotten, neglected and underappreciated and bringing them to the forefront.

Barry is a newly minted 2013 BFA graduate of the Fine Arts Studio program at Rochester Institute of Technology and will be displaying both sculpture and photographs in a solo exhibition, “Pour Quality” at Axom Gallery, 176 Anderson Ave., Suite 303. The show runs from July 24 to Aug. 24, with an opening reception scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 26.

According to the artist, he enjoys working with heavy material, especially reorienting them to defy gravity—“standing up what had previously been found strewn about, and bringing to life what was once inanimate and comatose.”

Barry is a Rochester resident who also volunteers for Rochester’s Greentopia Festival as an event planner and participating artist.

Axom Gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. For more information about the exhibition, call 585-232-6030.
