Film Series continues with ‘Side Effects’ Feb. 18

Johannes Bockwoldt, a visiting lecturer in RIT’s School of Film and Animation, continues the third-annual RIT Faculty Speakers Film Series Feb. 18, with a discussion after The Little Theatre’s 6:40 p.m. showing of the highly acclaimed thriller, “Side Effects.”

The “RIT Faculty Speaker Film Series,” a partnership between Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Film and Animation and The Little Theatre, continues at 6:40 p.m. this Monday, Feb. 18, with the widely acclaimed thriller, Side Effects.

Johannes Bockwoldt, a visiting lecturer in RIT’s School of Film and Animation, will lead a discussion following the film. Tickets for the screening are $5 as part of “The Little Theatre’s $5 Mondays.”

The “RIT Faculty Speaker Film Series” discussions are structured so both casual movie viewers and film enthusiasts alike have the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn more about the motion pictures in the series. The goal is to gain a better understanding of films with behind-the-scenes stories and experiences or general analysis.

This third-annual series continues monthly through May.

Bockwoldt has taught film/digital production and screenwriting courses at the School of Film and Animation since 2002. He has written plays and screenplays and worked most recently on the local feature film, King’s Faith. Originally from Germany, Bockwoldt was raised watching international cinema. His strong interest in and admiration for film history has led to his volunteering at the Dryden Theatre in Rochester, where he often introduces films.

About 'Side Effects'

The film tells the story of Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), a successful psychiatrist who begins having sessions with Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), a young married woman who is dealing with the jail release of her husband Martin (Channing Tatum). When Emily is reunited with Martin, Banks prescribes a drug called Ablixa to treat Emily’s anxiety disorder. Soon after taking the drug, Emily awakens to find a dead body in her apartment, having murdered the person. Banks is then heavily criticized, investigated and questioned whether it was Emily’s intention to murder the person, or if she is a victim of his medical treatment.
