Intersections: The RIT Podcast, Ep. 25: Not all learning does, or can, happen in a classroom. Last summer, Bolaji Thomas, professor in the College of Health Sciences and Technology, took a group of students to Nigeria to give them a firsthand look at the impact of malaria on global health. Abigail Melake, a biomedical sciences major, and Janice Fung, a biotechnology and molecular bioscience major, talk about what they learned.

RIT is partnering with 2U, a global leader in education technology, to deliver an online Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree. The program, which is 2U’s first architecture offering, takes RIT’s highly regarded campus-based degree online.

Matt Taylor '02 (film and animation - production option) was the co-supervising sound editor of a Warner Bros. sound team that won an Emmy Award for its efforts on Barry.

Ifeoma Nwogu, an assistant professor of computer science, received an NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award and grant for her five-year project to study human behavior by using machine learning techniques to analyze and find patterns in the many signals that individuals display during social interactions.

Made from an upcycled freight container, the new RIT Hydroponic Farm will provide fresh produce for the chefs who serve nearly 14,000 meals on campus every day. So far, the farm has produced roughly 40 pounds of greens since farm manager Dave Brault started harvesting in early August.

RIT students, faculty, staff and Osher members are part of the 12-day lineup of more than 570 eclectic performances during the KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival. The festival is a celebration of the performing and visual arts in more than 30 venues in downtown Rochester, featuring world-renowned performers as well as up-and-comers.

Intersections: The RIT Podcast, Ep. 22: Heart failure costs the U.S. $34 billion a year, with most of those costs due to repeated hospitalization. David Borkholder, RIT’s Bausch and Lomb Professor of Microsystems Engineering, talks with Nicholas Conn, a postdoctoral fellow and founder of Heart Health Intelligence, about a new invention that could help patients easily monitor their health in the privacy of their own bathrooms.

RIT’s Metaproject is coming full circle. Since 2010, Metaproject has paired RIT student designers with a client partner in what has become a seminal project for the university’s nationally ranked industrial design program. This year’s project is honoring both the 10th anniversary of Metaproject and RIT’s Vignelli Center for Design Studies.

All RIT graduate students are encouraged to submit proposals for oral presentations, demonstrations or poster talks by midnight Sept. 15 for the annual Graduate Showcase on Nov. 22. The daylong symposium will celebrate the diverse forms of scholarship conducted by RIT students pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree.

Projects developed from the partnership include a summer data analysis capstone project for RIT students that will wrap up in the next few weeks, an innovation competition for RIT students that will launch this fall, and a research experience for students that will examine app interfaces for memory-impaired individuals. 

RIT President David Munson this morning welcomed back the community, saying that the university is positioned for another exciting academic year.
