Student prepares for conference championship game

Jessica Glaz

Jessica Glaz, a third-year packaging science student, is a guard for the RIT women’s basketball team. Glaz, from Rockaway Beach, N.Y., currently holds the single-season scoring record in RIT history, with 444 points in her sophomore season at RIT. This year, she continued her success on the court, scoring her one-thousandth career point. In her time away from the classroom and the court, Glaz enjoys building puzzles, watching movies and riding bikes.

The RIT women’s basketball team will compete in the Liberty League championship game at 4 p.m., Feb. 25, in Clark Gym. Admission to the game is free.

Question: What brought you to RIT?

Answer: I was interested in RIT because I knew that I wanted to play basketball at the division III level, but I still wanted to have unlimited academic opportunities and go to a bigger school. RIT had it all.

Q: How did you become involved with the RIT athletics community?

A: Coming in as a freshman, a lot of the upperclassmen were involved in the athletics community. They would go to Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meetings, and we would go with them. On most away trips we travel with the boys basketball team, which is great because it gives us more time to hangout with them and interact.

Q: What was one of your proudest moments as a Tiger?

A: One of my proudest moments as a Tiger was definitely leading the team to our first-ever conference championship game appearance last year. Our program is continuing to grow and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Q: How do you find the balance between school, work and basketball?

A: I spend a lot of my time in the library! It all comes down to prioritizing what needs to get done and then just getting at it.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a student-athlete at RIT?

A: My favorite thing about being a student-athlete at RIT is the family-like atmosphere at this school. We’re friends with the majority of the other teams and athletes, and we all really support each other and go to each other’s games.

Q: What does it mean to you to be able to compete in your second Liberty League Championship game, this time at home?

A: Being able to compete in two consecutive Liberty League Championship games is a blessing. Our basketball program is growing every season and it's great to be able to see that the hard work is paying off.

Q: Do you have plans to continue your involvement with basketball beyond your time at RIT?

A: I love the game and it has played a huge part in shaping me into the person that I am today, so if I can stay around the game or help coach in the future, it would be a dream. If the opportunity presented itself, I would definitely think about taking it.

Q: What are your professional goals following your graduation from RIT?

A: I still have some time, but I think that finding a full-time job in packaging would be a great place to start.
