NTID names new director of alumni relations

After a national search, Rochester Institute of Technology’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf has named Loriann Macko director of Alumni and Constituent Relations. She served as interim director for a year and was responsible for successfully managing the 45th Anniversary Reunion last year.

Macko, of Mendon, N.Y., received a bachelor’s degree from RIT’s College of Liberal Arts in 1994. She began her career with RIT in August 1994 when she worked as a recruiter and career opportunities counselor for NTID’s Office of Admissions. She’s held numerous administrative roles in that office, PEPNet-Northeast, Alumni Relations and NTID Pre-College Outreach.

NTID President Gerry Buckley said he is pleased to have Macko heading the department. “Her experience and passion for RIT/NTID will lead to an era of even greater engagement with our more than 7,000 alumni.”

“I’m extremely honored to be chosen for this role and am excited to be given this opportunity,” Macko said. “RIT/NTID alumni are an extremely dynamic and diverse group – as an alumnus myself, I know how closely we hold NTID and its mission to our hearts.”

She said she plans to find ways to bring NTID alumni and the 33 alumni chapters together to work on projects, host meaningful engagement events and provide more opportunities for alumni who want to volunteer. In addition, she’ll work with community organizations, students, faculty, staff, parents and others who help provide scholarships and other support to NTID and its students.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this and look forward to meeting and working with our many fabulous alumni in all corners of the globe,” she said. “Go Tigers!”

NTID, one of nine colleges of RIT, was established by Congress in 1965 to provide college opportunities for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals who were underemployed in technical fields. Today, 1,432 students attend NTID; more than 1,250 are deaf or hard of hearing. Others are hearing students enrolled in interpreting or deaf education programs. NTID’s Center on Employment assists NTID students with finding co-op and permanent jobs. More than 100 interpreters, tutors and notetakers support students in and out of the classroom.
