International Student Orientation

Welcome, International Students!

As an international student, you are about to embark on an exciting journey filled with new experiences, opportunities, and friendships. Our goal is to ensure you feel at home long before you arrive on campus.

We understand that moving to a new country can be both exciting and challenging. Our dedicated team is here to support you every step of the way. We can't wait to see you thrive at RIT and make the most of your time here in the United States.

Peer Advisor Leaders (PALs)

The Peer Advisor Leader (PAL) program has been in existence for over thirty years at RIT, having established its place in our legacy at International Student Services as an integral part of the student orientation experience. PALs are student leaders from all walks of life, hailing from every background imaginable, voluntarily dedicating their time and energy to assisting international students who will soon be in the same shoes that they, too, were once in. Every incoming student will be assigned a PAL, who will start coordinating with their student cohorts several weeks before arrival. PALs assist in every aspect of international student orientation and help to foster and bridge connections that last throughout a student's time here at RIT and beyond!

Preparing for your arrival

Pre-arrival

As you prepare for your arrival in the United States, please review the pre-arrival information on the International Student Services website and obtain the following:

  • Passport with valid visa. The passport should be valid for at least six months into the future from the intended entry date.
  • I-20 (for F-1) or DS-2019 (for J-1) - Entry date can be no earlier than 30 days from the program start date listed on the I-20
  • Clothing for at least one week (Two if possible)
  • If bringing medication(s), ensure that a doctor's note is provided.
  • Electronic converters/adapters
  • Although RIT is cashless, a small amount of cash will be beneficial for cabs, tips, etc. -- $50 should suffice.

Arrival

When you arrive on campus, there are a few steps you must take in your first few days on campus.

  • Ensure that you register for one of the mandatory immigration overview sessions provided by International Student Services
  • Immigration check-in must be completed upon arrival. While this process can be done entirely online, you cannot complete the check-in process until you have arrived on campus. The process will consist of submitting the following documents:
    • Passport scan
    • Visa scan
    • I-94 scan
  • Your PAL will direct and assist you with information specific to your housing location, dining options, and answer any questions or inquiries you may have about the student experience here at RIT.
