Nancy Jurs

Nancy trained in traditional pottery with Frans Wildenhain and Hobart Cowles at RIT. Her early works were stoneware and raku vessels and and later expanded to sculptural blouse forms emblematic of women’s bodies and spirit. These pieces related to Greek draped sculpture and inspired Nancy to create larger-than-life forms. Post 9/11 her figures transformed into her ongoing Armor Series. “My work is about women in emergence”.  Her armor theme extends to safety for animals, as well. Today, working in a variety of narrative themes and materials, Jurs is one of the nation’s foremost sculptors. She has works in the collection of many museums including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Art and Design, and the Memorial Art Gallery.
