RIT Club Encourages Community to ‘Text for a Cure’ April 2

Texting is among the most popular ways of getting your message out, and on April 2, a student club at Rochester Institute of Technology will take advantage of that technology to raise much-needed funds for a national hospital.

The Up ’til Dawn@RIT student organization is sponsoring Text for a Cure to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. By texting ‘HERO’ to 90999 on April 2, a one-time amount of $5.00 will be donated to St. Jude’s. The $5.00 donation will be added to your mobile phone bill.

Up ’til Dawn is a national student-run organization with chapters at 375 colleges and universities across the country. The program unites faculty, staff and students in the fight against pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. Since 1999, the Up ’til Dawn program has raised more than $24.5 million for St. Jude’s.

RIT’s chapter, founded in 2007, has raised $10,400 this year for the hospital, which costs $1.5 million daily to run.

“We’re the first university in the country to hold a Text for a Cure event for St. Jude’s,” says Joe Majkowski, club executive director and electrical engineering major in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. “We hope to raise $7,500 so that kids with cancer can grow up and go to college too.”
