RIT ‘Freeze Fest’ Aims to Melt Away the Winter Blahs

Performance by comedienne Kathy Griffin Feb. 5 highlights weekend of events

Comedienne Kathy Griffin makes her way from the “D-List” to RIT’s Gordon Field House and Activities Center to headline the first Freeze Fest, Feb. 5-7.

By the time February rolls around, many Rochesterians will have had enough of the blustery, winter weather and may want to hibernate until spring. But Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Campus Life and Division of Student Affairs are encouraging students to remain active by participating in the first Freeze Fest celebration on campus, Feb. 5-7.

The event begins Feb. 5 with a ski and snowboard competition and carriage rides across campus. The weekend’s featured entertainer is comedienne Kathy Griffin, best known for her starring role on the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan and her Emmy-award wining reality show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show— $17 for students with ID, $26 for faculty, staff and alumni and $41 for the general public— are for sale at the Gordon Field House box office.

The festivities for the RIT community continue on Feb. 6 with a sled design competition, human sled pull, ice sculpture demonstrations, chili cook-off, brownie bake-off and Ice Disco. The grand opening of RIT’s newly designed Campus Center will also be held. Activities conclude on Sunday, Feb. 7, with a 5K race and Student Government Super Bowl Extravaganza.

“RIT’s Student Affairs staff is dedicated to making student life more exciting,” says Ryan Giglia, RIT’s assistant director for campus life programming. “This is one way to get our students out of their residence hall rooms and interacting with other students. It’s hard during the winter months when students tend to stay indoors. These activities provide some level of entertainment for everyone.”
