Student heads to Atlanta following graduation

Bertram Byam Jr. will take part in this year’s commencement celebration.

Bertram Byam Jr., a fifth-year management information systems student, will close his chapter at RIT with this weekend’s commencement ceremony. In addition to his studies, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native was involved with Unity House, New Student Orientation, Global Union, National Society of Black Engineers, MOCHA and other volunteer activities during his time at RIT. Following graduation, Byam will be moving to Atlanta to work for AT&T.

Question: What brought you to RIT?
Answer: A high school guidance counselor of mine suggested the school to me. I looked into it and really liked it. The Higher Education Opportunity Program at RIT made it all possible with their funding, but I was also happy to get to go to school away from home.

Q: Why did you decide to study management information systems?
A: I started my time here as an information technology student but through some struggle and career counseling ended up switching to management information systems. I have a better aptitude for people and for the big picture, which comes with project management, as opposed to coding, so it was a better fit.

Q: What have been some of your best memories from your time at RIT?
A: My best memories at RIT are connected to working with New Student Orientation for four years. All of the people who I met and have gotten to see grow at RIT just add to the return I have received from the school. Also, getting to host events through campus organizations shines bright in my memories.

Q: What are you most excited for about graduation?
A: I’m most excited about getting to graduate with all of the people who started at RIT when I did.

Q: Do you have a favorite place on campus?
A: My favorite place on campus is the Saunders College of Business. With RIT being a school focused on innovation, I have met some of the most innovative students in my business classes. The business staff and faculty have all contributed to making me and my fellow students strong, resilient individuals during our years here.

Q: How would you sum up your years spent at RIT?
A: These years at RIT have been a dream within a dream. The faculty and staff have planted an idea that as an RIT graduate you will be successful and I really believe it.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories from exploring the Rochester area?
A: My exploration of Rochester has stemmed from my campus involvement. My most favorite memory was participating in the Heart Walk with my MOCHA group and my favorite place is definitely the Public Market.

Q: What will you miss most about RIT after graduation?
A: I will miss the ridiculous weather we have here and the staff who have been so influential in my development.

Q: Are you nervous about anything as you transition away from college life?
A: I’m not nervous but rather eager. I just have to make sure my alarm clock is always set!

Q: Is there anything you wish you could have done during your time on campus?
A: I wish I could have laid a brick in one of the new buildings.
