- Michigan CRLT Players Present Moving the Needle
On April 9-10, 2019, RIT is hosting the CRLT Michigan Players for their fifth visit since 2014. This year the performance is offered in a two-part series called Moving the Needle. We will offer two performances of the Part 1 workshop on April 9 and two performances of the Part 2 workshop on April 10.
Moving the Needle Part 1: Shifting the Conversation around Sexual Harassment, April 9
Partly research presentation, partly embodied case-study, and partly community conversation, Moving the Needle: Shifting the Conversation challenges participants to expand their understanding of what sexual harassment is, how it impacts individuals and communities, and what makes an environment prone to its presence. Using the NASEM consensus study report (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/shstudy/index.htm) as both grounding and springboard, this session eschews a “tips and tricks” workshop model, and points attendees toward the ongoing reflective practices that individuals and communities will need to commit to in order to address the culturally embedded problem of sexual harassment. This session is best suited to department-level conversations among faculty and staff. The session length is 2.5 hours.
**The embodied case-studies in this session contain strong language and detailed descriptions of sexual harassment.
In this session, participants will:
- Identify behaviors that constitute sexual harassment.
- Discuss how those behaviors impact individuals and communities.
- Reflect on ways in which an organization might develop a climate that is more resistant to sexual harassment.
- Consider ways to support individuals who disclose a concern about sexual harassment.
Moving the Needle Part 2: Creating a Culture Resistant to Sexual Harassment, April 10
Building on introductory conversations about the widespread presence and consequences of sexual harassment on individuals and communities in higher education, Moving the Needle Part 2 gives units an opportunity to envision a different, more inclusive future. Available for departments who have participated in Moving the Needle Part 1, session attendees engage in communal responsibility by brainstorming concrete strategies their units can implement. Attendees jumpstart their conversations by analyzing an embodied case-study, and then participate in facilitated design-thinking exercises targeted at research-based pivot points to effect change. At the end of the session, academic units will generate specific actions they can take to create a culture that actively resists sexual harassment. This session is best suited to department-level conversations among faculty and staff. Given the communal and iterative nature of the work, the session length is 3 hours.
Participation in Part 1 is required for full participation in Part 2. Participation in both Parts 1 and 2 is strongly encouraged.
Registration Info: Nomination process underway. Within the colleges, interested faculty and staff should inform the Dean of their desire to attend. For others, please contact your supervisor. Based on nomination count and acceptance rate, a period of open registration may also be offered.
