Fall event review: Making the Most of Mentoring
Making The Most of Mentoring was held on November 12th. The purpose of this session was to discuss ways mentoring relationships are structured i.e. gender composition of the relationship, mentor assignment, and position, as well as specific techniques such as amplification that mentors can use to support female mentees. The two presenters for this session were Shalini (Shal) Khazanchi, Ph.D. Professor and Department Chair of Management at Saunders College of Business and Kristin Bain, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Saunders College of Business, Management. 10 faculty members attended with participants from Academic Affairs, SCB, NTID, CAD, CLA, GIS, and GCCIS. Of these participants, 50% were non-tenured track and 50% were tenure track. All of the participants who filled out the survey either strongly agreed or agreed that the session was a valuable use of their time and helped them grow their network at RIT. In addition, 67% of the participants who filled out the evaluation strongly agreed or agreed that attending this session provided skills or information that will support their career success. The overall feedback from the participants was that they found being able to learn more about mentoring and discussing this topic with other faculty was the most useful aspect of this session.
