Activist Vernon Wall Keynotes RIT’s North Star Center Speaker Series

Vernon Wall, nationally known speaker on social justice, leadership and the quality of student life, keynotes the 2009 North Star Center Distinguished Speaker Series. He presents his program, “One Better World,” at 2 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science auditorium at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The presentation is part of the RIT Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities. Wall, currently director of educational programs and publications with the American College Personnel Associations, will discuss social justice and individual identity as well as using knowledge to become agents of change on campus and in the world today.

“We are excited to have Vernon Wall come to campus to present One Better World. His interactive workshop will give students, alumni, faculty and staff a new prospective on becoming agents of change,” says Tracy Gatewood Okoye, coordinator of family, alumni and graduate initiatives, RIT North Star Center. “We as a collective body can challenge and inspire one another to move toward appreciation and celebration of our individual differences.”

Wall received his bachelor’s degree in political science from North Carolina State University and his master of science degree in college student personnel administration from Indiana University. He is one of the founders and facilitators of the Social Justice Training Institute, and has served as a trainer for the Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violent Social Change in Atlanta.

The program is free and open to the public. A reception for RIT and North Star Center alumni takes place after the keynote address at 3 p.m. in the Chester F. Carlson Center.
