Printing grad takes helm of Chicago YMCA

Richard Malone ’77 (printing management) is the new president and chief executive officer of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.

As CEO, Malone, 54, is responsible for the leadership and management of the organization – one of the largest nonprofits in the city– and will oversee its $84 million operating budget. The YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago is comprised of 20 membership centers, five camps in a three-state area, more than 65 site locations in Chicago and the suburbs and more than 3,000 employees. It serves more than 500,000 Chicagoland residents annually.

“While the YMCA has been an integral part of Chicago’s landscape for more than 150 years, we must continually challenge ourselves to stay relevant and evolve to meet the needs in our communities,” says A. Steven Crown, chairman of board. “Dick brings great passion for the Y’s mission with a fresh perspective on how we look to the future.”

Malone is the former senior vice president of Tribune Company’s Interactive group, a multimarket Internet business of Tribune’s diversified media enterprise, supporting the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun, among others.

In his career with Tribune that spanned 28 years, Malone also was senior vice president and general manager of Chicago Tribune, as well as vice president of operations for Tribune’s publishing division.

He is past president and current trustee of Have Dreams, a not-for-profit organization serving 17 communities across Metropolitan Chicago with a mission to improve the ability of children with autism to learn, function independently, socialize and realize their full potential.

In addition to his B.S. from RIT, Malone earned an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
