Why did you choose to attend RIT?
My decision to choose RIT was influenced by both practical and creative factors. I was putting myself through college, so a strong financial aid package was essential for making college affordable. RIT happily helped me navigate all the aspects of the process to put together the best financial aid package we could. Then, on my second visit to RIT, I spent the day with an upperclassman during an open house. It was such a valuable experience, allowing me to see the community and creativity in action. I felt inspired by other students’ work and it was such a powerful motivator. RIT really clicked for me on multiple levels.
Who influenced you most during your time at RIT?
I had an incredible group of professors who really invested in my growth. Tough love can be so motivating, and Owen Butler challenged me to push my creative boundaries. Studying abroad in Oaxaca was such a fantastic opportunity for both personal and artistic growth alongside Denis Defibaugh. And lastly, Dan Larkin helped me land my first internship with photographer Martin Schoeller, which was the jumping point for my career.
How did your RIT education prepare you for what you are doing today?
My education at RIT was truly transformative. The combination of a strong technical foundation with a creative approach gave me a unique advantage in my career as a photographer and photo editor. The camaraderie among all my peers during my years at RIT created such a supportive environment to learn and grow. Having a network to rely on even after graduation has made such a huge difference. I still lean heavily on my friends from RIT for guidance, advice, and resources.
What advice would you have for your 18–24-year-old self?
The importance of being assertive about your needs and goals. Knowing what you need to succeed—whether it’s resources, support, or opportunities—can really make a difference.
What is the best advice you have received and from whom?
To keep giving yourself until yourself is what they want. This is just a quote I stumbled upon somewhere on the internet, but it has helped me get through those inevitable moments of self-doubt.
What significance does Native American Heritage Month hold for you?
Native American Heritage Month has allowed a growing recognition of Native American culture beyond stereotypes. This awareness has played a significant role in dispelling myths and fostering understanding. Highlighting the contributions of Native American culture to art, food, society and language is crucial for appreciating the richness of our heritage. It’s important to continue these conversations and ensure that the complexities and diversity of Native American experiences are acknowledged and celebrated.
What would you like everyone to know about your Native culture?
The unity among different tribes, despite our unique cultures, is powerful. We share our varying cultures through gatherings and public pow wows where we share prayers, language, ceremonies, art, and songs. This not only strengthens our community ties but also allows for the sharing and preservation of traditions that have been passed down for generations. This past Indigenous Peoples’ day, I was so thankful to be able to attend a Shinnecock sunrise ceremony here in New York City.
Are there any traditions/holidays that your family and you observe that are important to your culture?
Every year my tribe, Passamaquoddy, holds a week-long celebration. During this time it allows me to reconnect with family and traditions as a people. With every celebration, there is always something new to learn.
What's your favorite type of entertainment?
I am a big music lover, so I would have to say live music.
When I am not working, you will probably find me ....
At a concert somewhere in the city.
