Cary Collection exhibit showcases Isaiah Thomas

RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection will host an exhibit about American patriot printer Isaiah Thomas through Sept. 30.

Seven RIT alumni, all Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalists, will be honored with RIT’s Isaiah Thomas Award in Publishing during an awards ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 22.

The award honors their outstanding contributions to the publishing industry. This year’s recipients are Paul Benoit ’76, Robert Bukaty ’82, Ken Geiger ’11, Stan Grossfeld ’73, Dan Loh ’95, William Snyder ’81 and Anthony Suau ’78. All seven graduated from RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences.

To coincide with the awards ceremony, RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection will host an exhibit about American patriot printer Isaiah Thomas and showcase some of his publications. The exhibit, “Isaiah Thomas, American Printer: Highlights from the RIT Cary Graphic Arts Collection” runs from Sept. 19 through Sept. 30 inside the Cary Collection, second floor of The Wallace Center.

In 1779, Thomas established The Massachusetts Spy at a print shop known as “the sedition factory” by the British colonial government. A copy of The Massachusetts Spy will be part of the exhibit. In 1810, Thomas wrote The History of Printing in America, regarded as the basic source of information on early American printing and publishing. RIT has two copies of this book and one will be part of the exhibit.
