Gallery r celebrates the New Year with Clairvoyance, a solo showcase featuring the work of Ryan Lamfers—a Midwest artist who employs metal fabrication and foundry techniques coupled with woodworking to create large-scale sculpture.

The show opens on Friday, Jan. 23, and closes with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 6, during First Friday Rochester, the monthly citywide gallery night that encourages collaboration between non-profit, university and commercial art venues in Rochester.

Lamfers earned his BFA in sculpture and painting at Kansas State University and his MFA in sculpture at Arizona State University. He exhibits his work nationally, explaining that issues dealing with environmental and personal concerns dominate the content and aesthetics of his work. “The action of making work in itself is a process of discovery for me. I make work that attempts to be open-ended in its interpretation. I strive to create dialogue, or conjure a memory, or simply for one to find beauty in the object.”

Gallery r, 100 College Ave., sits adjacent to Lumiere Photo, home to Spectrum Gallery, and is just a few yards from the Memorial Art Gallery and Village Gate. The gallery space is under the helm of RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, and offers students the same challenges and expectations that confront established artists—focusing on diverse exhibitions, educational opportunities and collaborations with the public, other art institutions and community groups.

Gallery r is handicapped accessible, features easy street and off-street parking, and is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. All exhibits are free and open to the public. During gallery hours, call 585-256-3312, or contact Zerbe Sodervick at 585-475-4977.
