Emerging Young Photographers to Present Work and Offer Career Insight Oct. 1
Photo District News magazine brings top talent selected for this year’s PDN 30 issue to campus
Photographers Cole Barash, Lucas Foglia and Jeff Hutchens are among the top young talent to watch. Photo District News magazine selected them as part of the 2009 PDN’s 30—emerging photographers deemed as rising stars in the industry. PDN’s editors made their 30 selections after reviewing more than 300 portfolios submitted from photographers around the world.
These three will be among those to present their work and discuss their careers at Rochester Institute of Technology at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 1 in the James E. Booth Building Webb Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Holly Hughes, editor of Photo District News, will serve as the panel moderator. Also on the panel will be David McLain, a Sony Artisan of Imagery, and Whitney Lawson, photo editor at Travel + Leisure magazine.
Barash photographs professional snowboarders. He started at age 17 and within a year landed his first magazine cover. His commercial and editorial clients include Burton Snowboards, Oakley, Dakine, Billabong, Smith Optics, and magazines Transworld Snowboarding and Onboard.
Foglia was raised on a small family farm on Long Island, an experience that informed and inspired “re-wilding,” his long-term project on self-sufficient homesteading communities. He is a graduate of Brown University and is currently an MFA student at Yale School of Art. Foglia’s images are in permanent collections at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Fine Art and Woodstock Center for Photography.
Shortly after graduating from college, Hutchens was hired as a staff photographer at the National Geographic Channel. Following two years on assignment, he launched a freelance career. Hutchens and his brother produced a six-hour documentary for the Discovery Channel about their travels through China, where they lived as children. His editorial clients include Time magazine, The New York Times and MacLean’s.
McLain is a regular contributor to National Geographic and is the co-founder of Merge, a boutique company dedicated to telling brand stories through still photographs and moving images.
Lawson began her photography career in fine art working at the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum in New York City. Lawson held photography positions at The New Yorker and New York magazines before joining Travel + Leisure in 2005.
The PDN 30 presentation is sponsored by Kodak, Sony and RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. For more information about the panel discussion call 585-475-2770.
