Faculty film series features ‘Quartet’
David Sluberski, lecturer in School of Film and Animation, to lead talk on film’s sound
The RIT Faculty Speaker Film Series, a partnership between The Little Theatre and Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Film and Animation, continues at 6:40 p.m. Monday, March 18, with Quartet.
RIT lecturer David Sluberski will lead a discussion following the film. Tickets for the screening are $5 as part of “The Little Theatre’s $5 Mondays.”
RIT Faculty Speaker Film Series discussions are structured so both casual movie viewers and film enthusiasts alike have the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn more about the motion pictures in the series. The goal is to gain a better understanding of films, with behind-the-scenes stories and experiences or general analysis.
This third-annual series continues monthly through May.
Sluberski, who will lead a discussion about the film’s sound, explains, “This place [the film] is one big music box. Despite the tempers, egos, out-of-tune instruments and verbal cadenzas, we still hear harmony, forgiveness and the importance of music and its emotional power.”
Sluberski is a lecturer at RIT’s School of Film and Animation and was recently nominated for an Outstanding Teaching Award for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty. He specializes in sound and is the recipient of numerous accolades, including multiple Telly awards.
About ‘Quartet’
Starring Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon and Pauline Colliz, Quartet tells the story of three residents who live in Beecham House, a home for retired opera singers. Every year on Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday, the residents unite to give a concert to raise funds for their home. But when Jean Horton, a former grande dame of the opera fallen on hard times, moves into the home to everyone’s surprise, the plans for this year’s concert start to unravel.
