Gallery r Hosts Solo Exhibition Featuring Work of Bill Finewood July 30-Sept. 11
RIT illustration professor showcases a broad sampling of his artistic talent
Art patrons: This is your opportunity to see a showcase of excellence by a Rochester Institute of Technology artist and faculty member whose work has been commissioned by clients such as Kodak, Xerox, Citibank, Dunn and Bradstreet, Time, and Fisher-Price.
RIT’s student run Gallery r “Goes Solo with RIT Artist/Faculty Bill Finewood” from July 30 to Sept. 11, with a closing artist reception scheduled from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.
The associate professor of illustration who has taught students for more than 30 years at RIT’s School of Art, will highlight a sampling of more than 30 pieces of work including both dimensional and digital techniques. “My work is produced as relief sculpture in paper or mixed media and then photographed with lighting to real the textural qualities of the materials I use,” Finewood explains.
“I came from a small town not known as a center for creative activity, but one where a strong work ethic and sense of accomplishment prevailed among the hard working population,” he says. “Coupling the notion of hard work, a creative outlook, flexibility and a desire to approach projects from a different point of view, allowed me to begin a successful career in art.”
In fall 2007, Finewood was curator of “Pop-Up Books: An Interactive Exhibition,” which was on view at RIT’s Bevier Gallery. He is currently working on “the mechanics” of creating his own pop up book—which is an art form in itself for many dimensional and digital illustrators.
Gallery r, located at 775 Park Ave., is open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is also open the first Friday of the month from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free; for more information call 585-242-9470.
