Photography book published by RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press wins acclaim

MOTHER DAUGHTER: Posing As Ourselves, published by RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press, was awarded an honorable mention in the 2009 i-Tonie Awards sponsored by Mohawk Fine Papers. This award, which includes a cash prize of $250, is voted on by industry experts and presented annually in recognition of world-class HP Indigo printing utilizing Mohawk papers for the HP Indigo press. Judges look for projects that exhibit “intelligence, virtuosity, maximization of HP Indigo capabilities, and excellence in production.”

In addition to this award, the book also appeared along with other HP photography books in the Digital Imaging Marketing Association Photo Book Showcase at the PMA 2010 International Convention and Tradeshow in Anaheim, Calif. PMA, formerly known as Photo Marketing Association International, is a non-profit organization that helps the worldwide photo imaging community achieve business success and adapt to new technologies through the development of educational programs and business services, marketing research, publications, and trade shows.

MOTHER DAUGHTER: Posing as Ourselves, was a collaborative project involving RIT’s Printing Applications Laboratory (PAL) and faculty members and research scientists from RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences along with industry partners HP and Mohawk Fine Papers.

Using the HP Indigo 5500 Press in PAL, the RIT team of researchers developed a process that uses a custom four-color ink set that consists of black and three grays (GGGK), instead of the traditional black and process colors (CMYK). One of the features of the HP Indigo Press is the ability for end-users to mix custom inks and, in this case, develop a custom palette of grays; similar to traditional duotone or tritone offset printing where several grays provide an extended range.
