RIT recognized with CASE awards for 2013 Big Shot

More than 2,400 volunteers, including 40 RIT students and 175 alumni, pitched in to capture this spectacular image of AT&T Stadium (formerly Cowboys Stadium) in Arlington, Texas, last March.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Big Shot at Cowboys Stadium last March—when more than 2,400 volunteers came together for a nighttime photograph at the world’s largest domed stadium—has received two top honors from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

CASE District II, the largest of the organization’s eight districts, awarded RIT two silver medals for best practices in alumni relations and alumni relations and programming/events for Big Shot No. 28 on March 23, 2013. The annual nighttime community photography event represents one of RIT’s signature projects and is coordinated by the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences.

“These awards are a testament to the hard work and countless hours dedicated to last year’s Big Shot in Texas by our faculty, staff, students and alumni,” said Kelly Redder, assistant vice president of Alumni Relations. “It took a true team effort to draw people from across the country and around the world together to help make the 28th Big Shot photograph a resounding success.”

Each category of the CASE awards is judged by a panel of experts who evaluate the entries for quality, creativity, innovation, adherence to professional standards, and success in meeting stated objectives.

“The size of the event outreach, coupled with the impression on participants, is absolutely incredible,” the judges wrote in their comments. “Big Shot No. 28 has innovation and creativity written all over it. Congratulations on organizing a large-scale community event with the campus partners while still keeping a focus on the value of the alumni engagement. It was creative, reflects RIT’s reputation for technological advances and leadership and was excellent from a public relations perspective.”

CASE District II is a regional organization of advancement professionals in the areas of alumni relations, communications and philanthropy. RIT received its awards at District II’s annual conference Feb. 9 through 11 in Baltimore.
