RIT’s Bevier Gallery Hosts Middle and High School Exhibition

Emily Gallagher’s self-portrait revisits her youthful memories—time spent using crayons, pencils, puzzle pieces, and paintbrushes.

A senior at Fairport High School, Emily wanted her oil painting artwork to be aesthetically pleasing. “I chose items that I had in my house that reminded me of my childhood. I love art and can see myself always doing this as a hobby.”

Emily is one of 300-plus middle and high school art students from 50 area schools—from Webster Schroeder to Rush-Henrietta to Wayland-Cohocton—who will participate in the Rochester Finger Lakes Regional Exhibition. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Bevier Gallery. The show runs through Feb. 27.

“With 343 pieces from grades 5-12, we have a wide variety of work from just about every medium possible,” says Debbie Kingsbury, assistant dean in RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, which is hosting the event. “Those who visit the show will be delighted by ceramic Oreo sculptures, needle felted animals, a sarcophagus, jewelry, digital work, traditional paintings, photography, and more. The young artists in the show have amazing potential and we are very proud to showcase their talents.”

Bevier Gallery is handicapped-accessible and is located in the James E. Booth Building on RIT’s Henrietta campus. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday; 7 to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday; and 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. All exhibits are free.
