Shtrykov-Tanaka Duo to perform at RIT
Performance includes blending music with computer avatar
Two acclaimed virtuosi—clarinetist Maksim Shtrykov and pianist Misuzu Tanaka—will perform at Rochester Institute of Technology’s Ingle Auditorium at 8 p.m. March 31 as part of the Performing Artists Concert Series, presented by RIT’s College of Liberal Arts.
Both Tanaka and Shtrykov attended The Julliard School and perform nationally.
The concert will highlight a collaboration between the duo and Professor Marla Schweppe, chair of 3D digital design at RIT’s College of Imaging Arts and Sciences, where they will produce a unique concert experience that blends live performers and animation.
Schweppe credits Professor Joe Geigel of RIT’s Department of Computer Science and graduate computer science student Vic McGowen, from The Villages, Fla., with helping in the collaboration between the musicians and the technology, described as a marionette avatar and “a little magic.”
Schweppe has worked with David Perlman, who founded RIT’s Performing Artists Concert Series in 1995, and others at RIT on various projects involving sets designed in 3D animation, a virtual theater where people controlling avatars perform together on a virtual stage, and the use of augmented reality glasses.
Tickets are $5 for students; $15 for RIT faculty, staff and alumni; and $20 for others. They may be purchased at the door, or in advance from the University Arenas Box Office.
A reception will be held in the SAU Fireside Lounge after the performance.
