Richard Poulin and Douglas Morris
Richard Poulin is a designer, educator, author, and artist currently living in Palm Springs, California. Poulin graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he received a Bachelor of Industrial Design degree.
Throughout his career he has focused on a generalist approach to all aspects of design, including graphic, environmental, interior, and exhibition design, dividing his time between professional practice and academia. For over 30 years, he was Design Director and Managing Partner for the internationally-recognized multidisciplinary design consultancy Poulin + Morris Inc. which he cofounded in New York City in 1989 with Douglas Morris.
As a highly-respected educator, Poulin taught at Cooper Union and the School of Visual Arts for over two decades, is a frequent lecturer at colleges and universities, a contributor to design publications in the United States and abroad, and a recipient of a research grant in design history from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. In 2005, Richard was made a Fellow of the Society of Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD), the profession’s highest honor. His work has been published in periodicals and books internationally and is in the permanent design collections of the Denver Museum of Art, Letterform Archive, Library of Congress, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
Poulin is the author of several books on graphic design, architecture, typography, and design history which have been translated into eight languages and used by students and practitioners worldwide. These include The Language of Graphic Design: An Illustrated Handbook for Understanding Fundamental Design Principles; Typography Referenced (coauthor); and Graphic Design + Architecture: A 20th- Century History, Design School: Type and Design School: Layout, and Rational Simplicity: Rudolph de Harak, Graphic Designer.
As an artist, Poulin’s most recent solo exhibition, entitled “Visual Essays: Elemental Singularities” was at the Brian Marki Fine Art Gallery in Palm Springs. His work has also been exhibited throughout the United States and is in the collections of several private collectors.
Douglas Morris is a designer living in Palm Springs, California. Morris graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design. As Design Director and Principal of Poulin + Morris Inc., an internationally-recognized design consultancy which he co-founded in New York City in 1989 with Richard Poulin, he has directed visual communications programs for clients including ABC News, Ann Taylor, Arizona State University, Barnard College, The City University of New York, College of William & Mary, Columbia University, Fordham Law School, Free Library of Philadelphia, Goldman Sachs & Co., Hines, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, among others.
Over his career, Morris gained extensive experience in alternative sign technologies that support information and wayfinding with state-of-the-art electronic information display systems, interactive media, and live-action transmission.
Morris is a Fellow of the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD), the organization’s highest honor. He is past President and board member of SEGD and former chairman of the organization’s annual international design awards program, entitled Diversity in Design. He is a member of American Institute of Architects (AIA), The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and SEGD.
Morris’s work has been published in periodicals and books worldwide and has received awards from American Corporate Identity, American Institute of Architects (AIA), The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), Applied Arts, Boston Art Directors Club, Global Corporate Identity, Graphic Design USA, Graphis, and Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD). He is also coauthor of Wayfinding: Designing and Implementing Graphic Navigational Systems.
