Laser-cut Relief Printing
In July 2024, the Cary hosted artist and printmaker Sarah Kinard as the Stephen O. Saxe Endowed Research Fellowship recipient. During this fellowship, Sarah drew inspiration from the Cary Graphic Arts Collection's printed type specimen books, and used the Cary Pressroom and the RIT SHED Makerspace to create her resulting prints. She designed laser-cut relief blocks that produced a series of prints focusing on the monotype process. The imagery was generated from photos of printed-type specimens and other graphic elements discovered through research at the Cary Collection. Images were processed as vector and halftone images to produce laser-cut substrates for printing on the Vandercook press. All laser-cut relief blocks were created at the RIT SHED. Each block was made the same size in square format, allowing for interchangeability. This created the flexibility for layered effects, including orientation printing. Sarah plans to utilize the process defined during her research fellowship to explore the nature of contemporary and traditional technology in printmaking.
Sarah Kinard is known for her screen printing and large-scale hand-carved relief prints. She is an artist, adjunct professor of screen-printing, and Director of The Woods Center for Wellbeing at the Mental Health Association in Rochester, NY. She holds an MFA in Studio Art from RIT 2018, and a Bachelor’s in Studio Arts from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally, including an exhibition with the University of Portugal in 2023.
