Faculty-researcher Gill Tsouri is developing a novel skin-sensing system that can be embedded onto the grip of a firearm to detect blood alcohol content levels, and once detected, the system could deter the trigger mechanism. The technology could be a step toward preventing firearm accidents, homicides, and suicides where there is a near 90 percent death rate.

Yan, an assistant professor of electrical engineering in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering, is leading a research team developing advanced optimization models and methods to manage complexities of operating the modern electrical grid through quantum computing.

The award is part of the NSF’s Research Traineeship Program (NRT), a national initiative to better prepare master’s and doctoral students for the interdisciplinary talents required in semiconductor chip development. The grant will provide 20 doctoral student fellowships to advance research in the much-needed field of semiconductor technologies.

The immersion, which allowed students to create their own microchip projects, provided full tuition for the week, a $500 stipend per student, housing, meals, and transportation.

Since 2002, more than 1,200 students have gained valuable experience creating a multimedia production ensemble with RIT Sports Network.

The wireless spectrum has become very crowded real estate, and work is underway through a new technology research center to improve spectrum access, co-existence, and security. 

RIT’s Clean Snowmobile team took first place at the recent SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge. It was the first time since the team began competing more than 10 years ago that the determined group dashed through the snowy terrain of Michigan to take top honors among 13 teams competing in the annual tournament in March.
