Mission and Accreditation

The English Language Center’s mission is to provide academically-focused English language courses within an intensive, comprehensive program to prepare international students for success in graduate and undergraduate study at RIT or at other universities. The program meets US visa requirements for those who study English full-time. In addition to its coursework, the English Language Center program provides a socially engaging, cross-cultural learning environment to develop students’ ability to function with confidence and cultural awareness in a broad variety of social contexts.

The Rochester Institute of Technology English Language Center is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period December 2016 through December 2021 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions in the U.S.

UCIEP is an independent consortium of university and college-administered intensive English programs in the United States. Founded in 1967, UCIEP's purpose is to advance professional standards and quality instruction in intensive English programs at universities and colleges in the United States. Our member programs are committed to the consortium's effort to ensure that students receive the highest quality intensive English instruction from trained, professional teachers.

EnglishUSA is the only organization in the United States that includes all types of intensive English programs (IEPs). With a membership of over 470 accredited IEPs, we are the largest membership organization specifically serving and supporting IEPs in the United States. We support the professional development of IEP leaders and staff, uphold professional standards for IEPs, and increase the visibility of IEPs in the United States.
