AWARE-AI Trainees and other graduate students will tackle where and with whom moral responsibility lies for human sensing AI development, deployment, and regulation. Participants will be introduced to philosophical works on collective and individual responsibility in technological development. They will apply their new moral reasoning skills to case studies of human sensing AI in which they will examine how moral responsibility for creating and disseminating these technologies should be shared across developers, companies, governmental institutions, policy and decision makers, private users, and the public.
Irina Mikhalevich is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy who specializes in the philosophy of science, cognitive science, and ethics. Her work examines methodological and conceptual challenges in animal cognition research, including how preferences for putatively simple or non-anthropomorphic explanations of animal behavior may bias the outputs of research. She is currently working on a co-authored book tentatively titled, "Alien Minds: Invertebrate Intelligence and the Evolutionary Meaning of Life." She was also part of a core team developing a new AI degree program.
