Queer migration studies brings together scholars, artists, and activists whose work shares a common interest in documenting how racialized gender and sexuality constitute every aspect of international migration policy and debate. In this talk, I look at how sponsored LGBT/queer migration (amongst intimates or strangers) both reproduces and subverts dominant geopolitical and affective structures of power, while simultaneously relying on new formulations of “the family” that operate in tandem with neoliberal and austerity logics.
Melissa Autumn White is assistant professor of Critical Sexuality and Queer Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY. Her research on queer migration studies and field (re)formation in Gender, Women’s, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies has appeared in Radical History Review, Sexualities, Women’s Studies in Communication, Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, Feminist Studies, and Feminist Formations. Her first book, the co-edited volume Mobile Desires: The Politics and Erotics of Mobility Justice, was published with Palgrave Pivot in 2015.
