Community Understanding and Healing: Stories of Discrimination and Progress
Join us for an online Playback Theatre workshop presented by Diversity Theater in partnership with the College of Science Inclusive Excellence Initiative.
Local, national, and international protests addressing human rights issues are not new; experiencing them during the COVID-19 pandemic may have increased our abilities to listen and act. “We all are trying to cope with the times and being able to hear others stories is even more important than ever.” That statement from a Diversity Theater participant is an important one. Sharing our stories and seeing them played back creates opportunities for processing and healing.
This workshop will center the stories of our RIT community most impacted by discrimination, racism, biases and oppression. The workshop will promote community building, diversity awareness and healing during times of physical distancing using virtual Playback Theatre (PBT). Virtual PBT is based on an international form of improvisational theatre where participants share personal stories around a common theme that are enacted by PBT actors and musicians in a virtual space.
“It is harder to work for healing when it’s all in your head. In addition, there’s a tremendous connection between people in the audience who see that story and have a similar experience to share… It’s theater for social justice and understanding.” Heidi Winters Vogel, co-founder Inside Out
