Virtual Discussion on “Untitled” (L.A.) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres
RIT City Art Space is hosting an online discussion about how Felix Gonzalez-Torres's interactive and site-specific "candy spill" installations invite participation and reflection, and how his work both challenges and accepts the limits of modern art institutions in the forums of equality, inclusivity and justice.
The evening will begin with a brief commentary by Joshua Chambers-Letson, professor of performance studies at Northwestern University and author of Contracting Justice: The Viral Strategy of Felix Gonzalez-Torres and After the Party: A Manifesto for Queer of Color Life. Following this, individuals from the area and region will share their perspectives on the work’s resonance today.
The event —set for a 6 p.m. start on Thursday, Feb. 11 — will be accompanied by a live graphic artist who will create a visual recording of the discussion! Register here. One of Gonzalez-Torres's candy spill installations, "Untitled" (L.A.), is on view at RIT City Art Space in downtown Rochester through Feb. 21.
The discussion is hosted by John Aasp, gallery director for RIT's College of Art and Design, and Juilee Decker, associate professor and director of the museum studies program in RIT's College of Liberal Arts.
Generous support for this project provided by Art Bridges.
