IRES Scholar Benefits
- Financial support for the pre-travel onboarding at RIT and the international stay at University West, Sweden:
- Stipend (includes support for insurance): $6,300
- Travel, accommodation, and subsistence: $3,000
- Conference travel: Up to $2,000 to present accepted papers
- Research on cutting-edge use-inspired AI research projects, guided by distinguished faculty mentoring teams at University West and RIT before, during, and after your international research experiences
- Support by RIT Global and our AI-PROWIL team for pre-departure logistics
- Access to advanced facilities for research on AI-enhanced automation, AI-enhanced automatic control, or AI-enhanced management at University West
- Access to career-advancing professional development for AI researchers
- Broadening of your professional network with students, faculty, and IRES peers
- Continued post-visit mentoring and dissemination guidance
Apply using the NSF ETAP platform. Applications open on December 15 and close by March 15.
Important Dates
Pre-travel onboarding: September 2-12, 2025.
Travel to Sweden: September 13-14, 2025.
International research experience at University West: September 15-November 7, 2025.
Return travel to Rochester: November 8-9, 2025.
Continued mentoring: November 10, 2025 - onwards.
Post-program hybrid workshop with technical presentations by IRES scholars: December 8, 2025.
Eligible Programs
Selection will prioritize students from these STEM Ph.D. programs at RIT:
- Biomedical and Chemical Engineering
- Cognitive Science
- Color Science
- Computing and Information Sciences
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Imaging Science
- Mathematical Modeling
- Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
- Microsystems Engineering
RIT MS, BS students or Ph.D. students from nearby colleges and universities will also be considered.
Application Process
Applicants will submit their CV, a written statement of interest, project preferences, demographics, GPA, degree program, and other information.
The written statement of interest should comprise 250-500 words and discuss how your research career will benefit from this experience and why you selected your preferred research projects.
An advisor’s or program director’s recommendation letter submitted directly to iresaiprowil@rit.edu will comment on:
- The applicant’s research interests
- The relevance of the program for the applicant
- The applicant’s preparation for an international research experience
- Intellectual maturity
- Communication skills
- Respect for diversity and cultural and individual differences
