This course introduces students to current best practices in written and visual technical communication including writing effective email, short and long technical reports and presentations, developing instructional material, and learning the principles and practices of ethical technical communication. Course activities focus on engineering and scientific technical documents.

This course covers a variety of forms of writing for public relations, including news releases, newsletters, backgrounders, public service announcements, magazine queries, interviews, coverage memos, media alerts, features, trade press releases, and public presentations. Students will write for a variety of media including print, broadcast, and the web.

An introduction to communication contexts and processes emphasizing both conceptual and practical dimensions. Participants engage in public speaking, small group problem solving and leadership, and writing exercises while acquiring theoretical background appropriate to understanding these skills.

Ad and PR Agency I is the first session of a full-year, hands-on experiential learning course. Students work at Technically Speaking, a student advertising and public relations agency, managed by the School of Communication with support from RIT Marketing and Communications. Students will hone their advertising and public relations skills while working with their instructor and mentors in RIT Marketing and Communications, College of Liberal Arts and others on real-world campaigns and projects. Students will execute an array of projects reaching across the marketing communications spectrum, from public relations and advertising to social media and digital design. Upon registration, students must complete an application to determine their role within the student agency. The course will also include instructional time covering advertising and public relations skills and industry case studies.

    RIT Ad/PR Majors Win Award at American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising District 2 Competition

    Four advertising and public relations majors represented RIT in its debut at the annual American Advertising Federation (AAF) National Student Advertising District 2 Competition held April 20 in New York City. Recognized for skillfully answering the judges’ questions and leaving no question unanswered, the team won the “Best Q&A” award and placed fourth overall, beating out legacy participants.

    Student agency lends creative talents to help promote Imagine RIT

    A new student agency called Technically Speaking is providing a valuable opportunity for RIT students to get first-hand experience in marketing and public relations. The group’s first major client was RIT’s Division of Marketing and Communications, and one of their projects was to capture the behind-the-scenes work of students getting ready for Imagine RIT.
