ASL and Slam Poetry Event Showcases Local Artists
Second annual Def Meets Deaf Poetry Jam features student, faculty and community poets
The unique combination of American Sign Language and slam poetry will be featured at the second annual Def Meets Deaf Poetry Jam, hosted by the Lovin’ Cup Bistro at Park Point on Feb. 6.
The event will feature ASL poetry presentations by students, faculty and alumni from Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as area performance poets, including members of Reenah Golden’s Rochester Teen Slam Team, which has been featured in the HBO series Brave New Voices. The event is free and open to the public.
“This event is an opportunity to both showcase some incredibly talented individuals, while also providing a better understanding of the ASL and slam poetry movements,” notes John Roche, professor of English at RIT and one of the event coordinators.
