Boost brain power at summer workshop
Knowledge Representation: From Data to Knowledge runs July 16-19
RIT students thinking about how to boost their brain power over summer break are encouraged to register for and attend a free workshop on campus during four days in July.
The Knowledge Representation: From Data to Knowledge workshop, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 16–19, is geared toward RIT undergraduate and graduate students and will focus on bio-medical informatics, linguistics and natural language processing, epistemology and the philosophy of computation. Various topics will be covered, such as how knowledge can be modeled in computational ways, and the benefits and roadblocks of machine-readable ontologies. In hands-on tutorials, participants will tackle real-world problems.
The free workshop will be presented by Cecilia Ovesdotter Alm, assistant professor of English; Timothy Engström, professor of philosophy, both in the College of Liberal Arts; and Anne Haake, professor of graduate studies and research in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences.
According to workshop organizers, no experience with computer programming, bio-medical informatics, computational linguistics or ontologies is required. Participants will earn a certificate of completion for attending the workshop all four days.
“This workshop will integrate humanities and STEM disciplines in new ways for students,” says Ovesdotter Alm. “It will benefit research applications that involve reasoning over data, as well as critical thinking across different domains of data and theories and practices of computational modeling.”
The workshop is sponsored by an Innovation in Graduate Education strategic seed-fund award from RIT’s Office of Graduate Studies and Office of the Provost, and by the College of Liberal Arts.
